Yoga Studies:

Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is a philosophical classic. It expresses the truth of the human condition, succinctly shows us how the mind works, and is a practical teaching on how to use the mind to end suffering. We will study each of the four chapters, one by one. The classes will be both lecture and, hopefully, lively discussion of your questions.

Please get the text, The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali: A New Translation and Commentary by Chip Hartranft, Shambhala Classics, 2003. Read the entire book and then re-read Samadhi Pada prior to the first class.

Class Dates: 4 Saturdays
Jan. 23 – Samadhi Pada
Feb. 13 – Sadhana Pada
March 6 – Vibhuti Pada
April 3 – Kaivalya Pada

Time: 1:30 to 5:00 p.m.

Fee:
$150 for the full series, $40 per class

The Upanishads

Saturday, Feb. 27
1:30 – 5:00 p.m.

The seminar will explore the ten principal Upanishads. The Upanishads are philosophical texts, some three thousand years old, that express the realization of the Vedic rishis. This realization is the nondualistic equation of atman (self) and Brahman, the ground of Being. The predominant school of Hindu philosophy, Shankara’s Advaita Vedanta, has its source in the Upanishads.
The wisdom of the Upanishads permeates all of Yogic practice, and is essential to understanding our practice.
Text: Upanishads translated by Eknath Eswaren. Please read before class.

Fee: $45

Workshop with Aurthur Kilmurray

Patanjali was a Neurobiologist!

Friday, April 30    6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Saturday, May 1   9 a.m. - 1 p.m. and 3 - 5 p.m.
Sunday, May 2     9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Through sustained mindful attention (samyama) and by playing with the patterns of energy flow in the yoga postures, we discover ways to somatically integrate the primary energies emerging from the brain stem, the emotional waves of the limbic system, and cognitive and self-reflective components of the cortex. When we can follow this process moment to moment in our relationships with ourselves and one another, new dimensions of wholeness and possibilities of deeper levels of integration emerge. This process, articulated in the teachings of yoga and Buddhism, brings a dynamic sense of aliveness to every moment of our unfolding lives.

About Arthur
Arthur’s interest in exploring and integrating science and spirituality was ignited while a student at MIT in 1970. There he discovered yoga and went on to study with B.K.S. Iyengar. He continued to promote yoga as a teacher and faculty member of the Iyegar Yoga Institute, and as a contributing writer to the Yoga Journal magazine. He was also president of the Northern California Iyengar Association. From 1993 to 2006, he was the principal teacher at Mystic River Yoga in Medford, MA, where he began incorporating into Iyengar's work the wisdom insights of Emilie Conrad’s Continuum, Bonnie Cohen’s Body Mind Centering and Vedanta. Arthur, deeply inspired by the work of Dan Siegel, is now writing a translation and commentary on Patanjali's Yoga Sutras from the modern perspective of interpersonal neurobiology. He brings all of his experience together to create depth and "integrative" yoga classes and training programs.

Backbends: Awareness and Acceptance

Sarurday, April 10
1:00 to 3:00 p.m

The backbending series of postures are rejuvenating, giving us energy and courage, as well as helping combat depression. They open the chest and make the spine flexible. Backbends open the forces of the pelvis, throat, and heart centers. This frees the energies of creation, expression and love. Using the breath as a tool, we will explore a variety of passive openings and progress to deeper active poses. We will complete the practice with careful releasing postures. Learn how to practice safely so that these openings are maximized and their energies correctly channeled.
