Zen: What is it? And how is it relevant to me?
Three-week Class
Mondays, June 3, 10 and 14
6:30-8:30 pm

This series of three classes will focus on both zazen and asanas, and will include body scans and walking meditation. Both large and small group discussions will be a part of each class session. The main text will be Returning to Silence, by Dainen Katagari.
An open mind is the only prerequisite for the class.

Instructor: Laura Kennedy

Laura received her certification to teach classical Astanga Yoga from Mount Madonna Center in 1996. She has studied yoga with many teachers. Baba Hari Dass is her primary teacher. She has traveled and studied in India, Nepal and Tibet. During her time in India, she completed a pilgramage in Almore region at the foothills of the Hiamayas. In 2004, she circumabulated Mt. Kailas in Tibet. She continues to study with Baba Hari Dass, and participates in retreats at MMC at least once a year.

In 1999 she began the study of Zen with Byakuren Judith Ragir, Guiding Teacher at Clouds in Water Zen Center in St. Paul. Byakuren introduced her to the Medicine Buddha and the practice of sesshin (silent intensive meditation retreat). In November 2012, Byakuren Judith Ragir ordained Laura as a Zen priest. Both Baba Hari Dass and Byakuren are important teachers to Laura. Both have trained her to skillfully apply the practice of Zen and Yoga in the service of all, and specifically to those in trauma. The blending of these two beautiful traditions supports the ability to compassionately respond to the immediate moment.

Weekend Qigong Workshop with Franz Möckl

Saturday, June 15, 9:30 am –5:00 pm
Sunday, June 16, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Chang Mi Gong (Spinal Qigong) is an ancient Qigong style based on two systems: the Chinese Buddhist Ch’an tradition and the Tibetan Mi School. It was kept secret for a long time and was mainly practiced by monks in the highlands of the Himalaya.

Day 1: All are welcome. No prior experience required.

Chan Mi Basic Exercises are slow, gentle, snake-like movements, which create flexibility, subtleness, and permeability of the spine. Moving through these traditional exercises releases tension and energy blockages in the spine, joints and the entire body.

Day 2: Participation only if you have attended Day 1 or have had prior experience.

Yin Yang He Chi Fa is the balancing of Yin and Yang in the body, which helps regulate the heart. Other benefits include regulation of all organs in the belly area to improve indigestion, weakness of bladder, liver problems, regulation and balancing of blood pressure, and intensifying of Qi feeling and of guiding Qi.

Connection with Earth & Heaven
Earth-Qi: Strenghtening of Blood and Yin
Heaven-Qi: Strengthening Qi and Yang

Summer Yoga Intensive with William

Deepen and Stregthen Your Practice with Twice Daily Classes
Integrating Meditation and Asana

Sunday, August 18 to Friday, August 23

This class will combine yoga asanas with Vipassana (mindfulness) meditation practice. You will practice with the focus on bringing meditative concentration to the asana practice. Mindfulness (Vipassana) meditation is a simple and direct practice, the moment-to-moment observation of the mind/body process through calm and focused awareness. Learning to observe experiences from a place of stillness enables one to relate to life with less fear and clinging. Seeing life as a constantly changing process, one begins to accept pleasure and pain, fear and joy, and all aspects of life with increasing equanimity and balance. This workshop is for students with at least one year of experience and will include asana and dhyana (meditation) in the Vipassana tradition. You may be a beginner to meditation practice.

Founder and director of the Minneapolis Yoga Workshop, William is a certified Iyengar instructor and has been practicing Yoga since 1975 and teaching Yoga since 1979. Iyengar, with Ramanand Patel as his primary teacher in the U.S. His other major influences are the Vipassana and Advaita Vedanta traditions. William’s teaching weaves these traditions into the practice of asana. His teaching blends and balances concentration and precision in asana practice with mindfulness and compassion in daily living.
