Weekend Workshop with Arthur Kilmurray
Awakening: Yoga, Emotions and Transformations in Consciousness

Friday, June 6
Saturday, June 7
Sunday, June 8

Sthira sukham asanam: posture is steady and openly relaxed. PYS, II-46

In teaching posture, yoga classes usually place a lot of emphasis on the body (alignment) and mind (focusing, awareness), but rarely do we delve into the sometimes murky realm of emotions and how they affect our fundamental relationships to the world. Join us to learn how we can use posture to explore the dynamics of our emotions and the underlying energies of the autonomic nervous system that support them and discover how integral they are in maintaining a healthy self sense. By learning how the cultivation of sthira and sukham takes us into a much deeper level of integration of the nervous system than just the physical anatomy, and how this requires an ongoing relationship with the world around us, we can transform our yoga/meditation practice and life.

Arthur Kilmurray has been studying yoga and meditation for over 30 years. A longtime student of B.K.S. Iyengar and Ramand Patel, his teaching has also been inspired by his studies with the wisdom teachings of Continuum with Emilie Conrad, Body Mind Centering with Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen and Developmental and Evolutionary Movement with Caryn McHose. He is also studying Vedanta with Swami Dayanda Saraswati, and other non-dual teachings and teachers. Currently he is studying and working in psychotherapy, exploring the deep connections among the latest scientific findings in psychoneurobiology, affect theory, yoga asanas, meditation and spiritual awakening.

Summer Yoga Intensive with William

Deepen and Stregthen Your Practice with Twice Daily Classes
Integrating Meditation and Asana

Sunday, August 24 to Friday, August 29

This class will combine yoga asanas with Vipassana (mindfulness) meditation practice. You will practice with the focus on bringing meditative concentration to the asana practice. Mindfulness (Vipassana) meditation is a simple and direct practice, the moment-to-moment observation of the mind/body process through calm and focused awareness. Learning to observe experiences from a place of stillness enables one to relate to life with less fear and clinging. Seeing life as a constantly changing process, one begins to accept pleasure and pain, fear and joy, and all aspects of life with increasing equanimity and balance. This workshop is for students with at least one year ofexperience and will include asana and dhyana (meditation) in the Vipassana tradition. You may be a beginner to meditation practice.

Instructor: William Prottengeier
Founder and director of the Minneapolis Yoga Workshop, William is a certified Iyengar instructor and has been practicing Yoga since 1975 and teaching Yoga since 1979. William studied with Swami Veda Bharati (Pandit Usharbudh Arya) for 15 years. His teaching flows from the Hatha Yoga tradition of B.K.S. Iyengar, with Ramanand Patel as his primary teacher in the U.S. His other major influences are the Vipassana and Advaita Vedanta traditions. William’s teaching weaves these traditions into the practice of asana. His teaching blends and balances concentration and precision in asana practice with mindfulness and compassion in daily living.
